I ask you, intelligent, well-read DCist reader: does this image of a toga-clad woman, representing the Roman ideal of Virtus, as she breaks the bonds of cruel monarchy, offend you? No, not for the weird way her toes are drawn. You know — because of the boob. Surely not, right?
Well, Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli isn’t pleased with that lady letting it all hang out while she’s taking down the King and enabling American and Virginian independence.
According to the The Virginian-Pilot, Cuccinelli — who you may remember being skewered by Jon Stewart in March for a letter he penned which advised that “that the law and public policy of the Commonwealth of Virginia prohibit a college or university from including ‘sexual orientation,’ ‘gender identity,’ ‘gender expression,’ or like classification as a protected class” — has pulled an Ashcroft: issuing lapel pins to his office which feature a revised seal with “more modest attire,” an armored breastplate that completely covers Virtus’ bust.
So, any Virginia residents feel like emailing the AG a primer on iconography? Besides, Mr. Cuccinelli, Francisco Goya beat you to this trick by like 200 years. Get with the times.
