On Friday, D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty and District Department of Transportation Director Gabe Klein were joined by Arlington County Board Chairman Jay Fisette to announce a new regional bike-sharing service. The new system will bring 1,100 bikes to 114 stations throughout Arlington and D.C., enabling free egress between the District and the Commonwealth. Once it launches later in the year, it will be the largest bike-share program in the country. But no one knows yet what to call it.

DDOT wants you to help name it. The Department has launched a site through godcgo.com to ask users to vote for their favorite bike-sharing program suggestion. Most of the choices play it straight, like “Capital Bikeshare” and “ShareCycle.” But “George” is a cheeky option, and “Bikington” is kind of okay. Voting is open through 5 p.m. on June 4. Reform-minded political nerds, take note: The bike-sharing naming election is a single-transferable vote system!

The ballot screen offers a write-in box, so — since you lot in the comments section never hesitate to share your strong opinions regarding absolutely anything — this is your opportunity to name the new bike-share program. How about the Teddybike? Distrixi?

The BIXI system, as its known in Montreal, is not so different from the SmartBike — the other bike-sharing program operated by DDOT. BIXI bikes are three speeds with internal hub gears, a front rack, and a few other whistles (but no bell). But is one of these enough to get you up the hill in Rosslyn?
