Photo by Kevin H.Good morning, Washington. What am I editing, Phoenixist? It will be so hot today, we’re kind of expecting the snow in last February’s Snowpocalypse photos to virtually melt. Record temperatures around the area — 103 at National, 102 at Dulles, 101 at BWI — are looking vulnerable; and it is another Code Red day. And, oh — the humidity. Hundreds of poor souls had their power go out last night and are still waiting for Pepco to return them to an air-conditioned splendor. Meanwhile, our Twitter feed has a lot more messages about flash fires and manhole explosions than it did a couple of weeks ago. On the bright side, there is so much heat, we might get a break earlier than we expected.
Water and Gas Mains Break in D.C.: A gas leak at 10th and G Streets NW and a water main break near the intersection of northbound Interstate 295 and Benning Road NE are causing some traffic problems this morning. The gas leak is under control, but D.C. Fire and EMS are still checking some buildings and police are directing traffic around the ruptured main. The water leak will take a bit longer to fix — a 30-inch main ruptured and two lanes will be closed so that DC Water can repair it.
Just In Time For The Three Showers You’ll Need Today: Speaking of water mains — the repairs to the cracked WSSC water main have been completed, and officials have lifted water restrictions on 1.8 million people in Montgomery and Prince George’s County. Water officials had said that consumption did not decrease to the level that the agency was hoping for, but water sample tests came back clean.
Metro Short On Cars This Morning: This morning was the first rush hour after WMATA pulled 70 Series 4000 cars off the tracks to test a door closing issue. The cars will be back in two to three weeks, but the real question: did any of you even notice?
July Fourth Weekend Turns Violent: Independence Day weekend was a celebratory one in the District, but that doesn’t mean that crime took a couple of days off. Notably, details on a pair of incredibly depressing murder stories are now starting to surface. A 19-year-old former Congressional intern was shot in the head early Saturday morning near the Watts Branch Recreation Center, while a retired D.C. Protective Services officer was gunned down when five young men approached a party with guns and he attempted to intervene.

This Day in DCist: Last year, we broke down Marion Barry’s latest brush with the law; in 2006, we got all clever with that year’s new additions to the Merriam-Webster dictionary.
