  • Police Chief Cathy Lanier says that cases of sexual assault are up in the District, including double-digit increases in certain areas like the Seventh District, which sources told WTOP has seen a 325 percent jump in the first six months of 2010. Amanda Hess adds that while the news is naturally distressing, it might be an indicator that sex crimes — which are woefully under-reported in D.C. — are being brought to the police’s attention with increased frequency.
