Vince Gray had a busy weekend. First, he told area bloggers that, if elected, he’d be bumping up attempts to achieve self-determination in D.C. What better way to follow-up on that campaign promise than getting the chance to talk about it with President Barack Obama? (Although we’re guessing that Gray’s convo with the President was a little more broadly focused.) The mayoral challenger got his chance to chat with the Commander-in-Chief yesterday afternoon; both attended the Washington Mystics game, Obama with his daughter Sasha. The Mystics were obviously inspired, laying a beating on the Tulsa Shock, 87-62. It was a good photo op for Gray, considering that his opponent, Mayor Adrian Fenty, has held an audience with the President numerous times in the past.

At this point, we are obligated to wonder — yet again — when Obama will be attending a Capitals game. The Prez has now seen every other tenant of the Verizon Center play live, even the arena’s subletters, like Georgetown basketball. Obama sat beside Ted Leonsis yesterday — I wouldn’t put it past Leonsis to bend Obama’s ear about his conspicuous absence from a Caps game while he’s held office. With the Mystics’ victory, Washingtonian teams upped their record to 3-3 with the President in the house.
