Last night’s Ward 4 straw poll and forum was far too lively for words alone, so let’s go to the video footage! The images are a little grainy and the audio leaves much to be desired, but you’re not really going to watch this to learn about the intricacies of school testing or municipal finances. Hit play and just listen for the cheering, jeering, booing, and yelling that accompanied virtually every answer from front-runners Vince Gray and Adrian Fenty.
It’s also probably worth mentioning that Gray wasn’t the only winner in last night’s straw poll: Phil Mendelson (for the At-Large seat on the D.C. Council), Kwame Brown (for the council’s chairmanship), and Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton also claimed wins. Mendelson edged out Michael D. Brown and Clark Ray — but interestingly, Brown, currently D.C.’s Shadow Senator, got within 60 votes of the incumbent and crushed Ray, who has run a spirited campaign against Mendelson. Brown has barely campaigned for the position — but he does benefit from having the same name as Michael A. Brown, the current independent At-Large council member who lives in Ward 4, and attended the poll and forum. Could a little name-confusion go a long way for Brown? It looks like it.
D.C. Wire has tallied up the straw polls so far: Gray has taken wards 3, 4, 6, 7, and 8, while Fenty can only claim Ward 2.
