Yesterday afternoon, a massive thunderstorm tore through the region like Superman through a phone book. The damage was particularly extensive in Northern Virginia; the Mayor of Alexandria told one reporter, without hyperbole, that the area looked like a “war zone.” DCist staff photographer Meaghan Gay, an Alexandria resident, documented the area in the storm’s immediate aftermath; a large number of Virginia homes are still without power this afternoon.
