It’s a story that’s been trotted out quite a bit in recent months: homicides in the District are way, way down. Hooray, right? The Post’s Martin Weil notes that if current trends hold, the District is on pace to end 2010 with 115 homicides, by far the lowest total in several decades. But obviously, homicides aren’t the only thing to look at when we’re talking about crime in the District. We thought we’d take a look at couple of other very basic statistics to get a better idea of the current criminal data.

There has indeed been a huge decline in the number of homicides over the past two years — that much is indisputable. (Taken in concert with the area’s rising population, it’s an even more impressive statistic.) After a slight bump in both 2007 and 2008, the police have been able to boast a double-digit percentage decrease in homicides over each of the past two years.

Something to be proud of, for sure. But homicides — despite being the most glamorous crime statistic out there — hardly give a comprehensive idea of how much crime actually happens in the District.
