Washington is a regular target for terrorist threats; uncorroborated open-ended threats like this one are pretty much the norm. But it appears to be the dogs days of summer for everyone — even those tasked with informing the public about such high-priority emergencies. Last night around 11 p.m., @72_Hours, the Twitter account set up by the D.C. Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency to deliver information to people as quickly as possible in the event of a major disaster, sent this out: “PEPCO reports a car parked over a manhole at 1015 Fairmont ST NW. Only 6 customers are affected.” Quick, batten down the hatches! AlertDC, which similarly sends out emergency updates, added half an hour later: “DPW has a crane enroute to the location to remove the vehicle.” Slow news night, guys?
