One of the city’s more optimal quick/drunk/comfort foods, the Falafelshop a must-stop for any adventurer who decides to traverse the dark wilderness that is 18th Street NW on a Friday or Saturday night. But it looks like we’re going to need to learn how to share our pita-stuffed goodness with a lot more people: the restaurant’s ownership announced this morning that they are actively looking to franchise.
Taking a look at the details: it would seem that as far as franchising goes, Amsterdam Falafel seems to have a very workable model going for it — it’s easy, fast food, there’s relatively little space needed to operate the restaurant and the raw food (mostly chickpeas) is relatively inexpensive to procure. It appears that ownership is banking on said portability: the franchise availability map at the Falafelshop’s website is quite ambitious: 14 states plus D.C. are listed as “available areas,” while 11 more are listed as “may consider.” Any investor looking to open a Falafelshop (suggestion: directly next door to my apartment) is looking at an initial investment of anywhere between $400,000 and $650,000 in fees and other costs.
So, D.C., where do you want to see a new Falafelshop open up?
