A little before 8 p.m. tonight witnesses throughout Northwest DC reported seeing more than twenty orange lights in the sky. This DCist writer witnessed the lights over Columbia Heights, which appeared to be traveling southwest. Based on their movement and the fact that they eventually faded out, it’s likely the lights were Chinese sky lanterns. These are small airborne paper lanterns, essentially a candle with a rice paper ‘balloon’ that rises with heat. It’s unknown at the moment where the lanterns were launched from or why. The lights began to fade out as they passed over Dupont Circle. Sadly, the Great U.F.O. Sighting of 2010 has been debunked.
