It’s not even clear whether or not Stephen Colbert’s people had even applied for a permit to hold the “March to Keep Fear Alive” on National Park Service property, but that’s a moot point now. Colbert showed up on The Daily Show last night to ask Jon Stewart whether he could mooch off his permit, which came through last week and affords Stewart space between 3rd Street and 7th Street on the Mall.
After Colbert wondered why he’d even need a permit to host an event in America’s backyard — “would I need a permit to host an event with 100,000 people in my own backyard?” — Stewart obliged to share, and the event was re-branded as “The Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear.” Then Oprah showed up to do her thing and give away stuff. It was all very thrilling, as you can see above.
We’re kind of bummed — we thought that the dueling events would really work best if Colbert had actually marched over to Stewart’s rally. Aside from being a clever wink to the counter-programming which ran during the Tea Party rally in late August, there was the fun aspect where people would have had to pick sides.
