Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy Lanier is live on The Kojo Nnamdi Show right this second, and the discussion got off to a hot start, with talk about last Friday’s incident in which a man was allegedly beaten to death by five employees of the DC9 nightclub. “With an ongoing investigation, there’s very little I can say,” Lanier said, in an apparent backtrack of her comments the day after the crime, in which she called the incident an act of “brutal vigilante justice.” Lanier added that she tries to “keep within the guidelines of the charging document” when making comments. [UPDATE: Later in the interview, Lanier said “I try to stick with the charging document in making statements. Sometimes I don’t.”] “Anything further than that…I can’t really comment on,” said the Chief. “I try to be as open and honest as possible,” said Lanier. (Which was an interesting statement, considering that Lanier later claimed the Washington City Paper had reported inaccurately about the names of some Petworth gangs — names which Lanier doesn’t want the press to disclose.) Lanier continued to tout the eyewitness testimony the police recorded on the scene, but confirmed that everything in the case still hinges on the report of the D.C. medical examiner, who she described as “just being prudent.” You can listen in to the second half of the Politics Hour here.
