Photo by Paige Weaver.Good morning, Washington. The Red Line basically stopped running for 25 minutes during rush hour last night after someone claimed to have a bomb on a train at the Tenleytown station around 6:15 p.m. According to the Post, Metro Transit Police offloaded the train and did a scan of the train, but found nothing. The person who made the allegation underwent questioning and Red Line service resumed around 6:40 p.m., but not without a big backup along the entirety of the line.
Talkin’ Hedgepeth: Things were going relatively well for Ward 3 Republican Council candidate Dave Hedgepeth. He’s got an opponent in Mary Cheh that appears vulnerable after breaking with her constituents by supporting Vince Gray, he got the endorsement of the Washington Post and he appeared to be walking that tightrope between the momentum of Republicans nationwide and the kinder, gentler GOP that he and his fellow Republican Council candidates are projecting. Of course, all that attention has put Hedgepeth on the radar of the local hacks — it was double trouble yesterday. First, Mike DeBonis reported that Hedgepeth owes nearly $13,000 in back taxes based on a lien filed in April 2009. (Of course, if he won he’d only be joining a few other Councilmembers with such problems — though I’m sure tax investigators would be interested that Hedgepeth was spending more than $2,300 on his own campaign instead of on his debt.) Meanwhile, Loose Lips checks out Hedgepeth’s Facebook page, and finds that he “likes” Sarah Palin and Christine O’Donnell.
Police Make Arrest In AU Professor Case: D.C. police arrested an 18-year-old late last night after he was seen driving the Jeep Cherokee which belonged to deceased American University professor Sue Marcum. The vehicle had gone missing from Marcum’s Bethesda residence by the time police arrived to investigate her death. D.C. resident Deandrew Hamlin was driving the Jeep on Benning Road NE when its tag number was caught by a license plate recognition sensor; Hamlin then attempted to elude police, eventually crashing into a signpost at the intersection of New York Avenue and M Street NW. Montgomery County police plan to interview Hamlin; they also said that Marcum had experienced some kind of trauma, but wouldn’t go into specifics.
Alexandria Residents Protest Metro Station Tax: WTOP reports that a group of citizens in one Alexandria neighborhood are organizing in opposition to a new tax which would raise $270 million in revenue to build an in-fill Metro station at the redesigned Potomac Yard development. The group is planning a protest during rush hour in the area on November 1; the tax, which would cost residents of the neighborhood about $2,000 per year, has not been approved by the city council yet.
