The future of the site on which Bruce Monroe Elementary School once stood has been a contentious matter for some time. And with each progressive step in the process, things have gotten messier and messier. First, the school was demolished earlier this year, a move which remains protested to this day). Then Vince Gray said that there wouldn’t be any construction on a new school until 2018. Then there was a debate over the city’s RFP to redevelop the site, which many residents have been enjoying as a public park. Then the news arrived Monday that the only bid to come in on the RFP was from a developer consortium who would like to build a large mixed-use development on the site. Each step has fostered the existing fracture in the community about which use of the land would be best for the neighborhood.
So where does the debate go from here?
