During the day, I watch a lot of Channel 13’s D.C. Council feed. Most of the time, it’s routine viewing — hearings, testimony, that kind of thing. So when a woman sporting a three-foot tall balloon hat accepted a proclamation from Ward 3 Councilmember Mary Cheh this morning, well, I felt the need to record it for posterity’s sake.
About a half an hour ago, the Council honored Judy and Gary Kopff, a couple who moonlight as clowns and entertain wounded soldiers at Walter Reed Medical Center, among other places. Clown Gary, who joked that they are “clowns at-large,” certainly do some very good work ( you can read all about the laughs they offer vets in this Washington Times profile), and Judy and Gary shared some emotional words, focusing on how they flipped the negative news that they were unable to have children into a positive by deciding to help soldiers at Walter Reed.
In addition to the touching testimony, I am nearly certain that Judy was rocking the coolest headgear ever worn by someone accepting a proclamation in Council chambers.
