(AP Photo/Jacquelyn Martin)Ingmar Guandique was found guilty this morning for the murder of Chandra Levy in Rock Creek Park in 2001.
The jury, consisting of three men and nine women who deliberated for about three-and-a-half days, came to a decision shortly after 11:45 this morning and announced their decision to the court around about an hour after reaching a verdict.
Guandique, who is 28, was originally charged with six counts in the case, but prosecutors dropped all but two counts of first-degree murder — he is currently serving a sentence for an crime unrelated to the Levy slaying in a California prison. Guandique’s counsel had framed his defense on a lack of physical evidence and several mistakes made during the lengthy investigation into the murder. The prosecution’s trump card was a former cellmate of Guandique’s who testified that he heard Guandique admit to the murder.
Guandique will likely face a life sentence upon sentencing, which will take place in February.
