Good morning, Washington. It’s a new year and the city has a new set of leaders, but Washington’s old problem with street violence was the big story yesterday. Six people were shot in two unrelated incidents in the District yesterday, at least four suffering serious injuries, according to the Post. In the first shooting, four people inside a car parked on the 1300 block of Congress Street SE were pelted with bullets around 7 a.m.; later in the afternoon, two teenagers were shot on the 4500 block of New Hampshire Avenue NW. One of the two teens shot in the later incident died after being transported to the hospital, marking the city’s first homicide of 2011.

Gray Warming To Tax Increases: The Examiner’s Freeman Klopott reports that shortly after being inaugurated as the city’s sixth elected mayor, Vince Gray admitted that he’ll probably consider tax increases when preparing next year’s budget. During a press conference, Gray — who has avoided instituting tax increases for some time, and argued against instituting a tax-and-spend policy during last month’s budget cuts — said that tax bumps were “pretty close to the table” and that he has to “consider all options” in order bridge 2012’s gap, predicted to be nearly $500 million.

Hope Springs Eternal: Another mostly miserable football campaign around D.C. is in the books, as the Redskins limped to a 6-10 record with a loss against the Giants and the University of Maryland hired former Connecticut head coach Randy Edsall — hardly the “splash” hire many were expecting — as their new head coach. In a Washington Post poll, Terrapin fans overwhelmingly chose “irate” to summarize their reaction to Edsall’s hiring; while frustratingly blind Redskins optimism is everywhere you turn. Just in case you haven’t given up on the Redskins completely, they’ll draft tenth this spring, and here’s who they’ll play. (Oh, look — New England again!)

Briefly Noted: Police still searching for suspect who killed D.C. man at Bethesda hospital and forced four-hour lockdown…Montgomery County libraries slashing services…Orioles pitcher is main suspect in killing…Lane closures coming soon to New York Avenue bridge, major Va. roads…Someday, we’ll be unable to tell when local morning news starts or ends.

This Day in DCist: Last year, the economic indicators for the year ahead were looking good; in 2009, Gabe Klein took the reins at DDOT.
