Sure, Stephen Strasburg might be getting a lion’s share of the attention during the first week of Nationals spring training. But what about our good friend Chien Ming-Wang? Wang, pursued vigorously by the Nationals last winter, is back to work after injury struggles that have kept him on the shelf for over the last two years.
Nationals beat blogger Mark Zuckerman reports on Wang’s first performance session at camp in Viera, Florida yesterday:
…Wang didn’t appear to be throwing anywhere close to full velocity. He has a slow, deliberate motion that can be deceiving and make it appear he’s not throwing as hard as he actually is. But if you watch the above video from the fine CSN crew that has joined me in town for several days, you’ll notice he seems to be throwing from a very upright position and not really extending on his finish.
Nationals’ pitching coach Steve McCatty told Zuckerman that “there’s been a big change” in Wang and that Wang “looks a lot better.” Others weren’t so sure about whether Wang will be able to deliver this season; Sports Illustrated reporter Will Carroll expressed serious concern that Wang’s motion didn’t include enough “pronating” upon release.
Fingers crossed that the kink works itself out so Wang can get back to a regular release.
