It isn’t part of the transit agency’s Year of Three-Day Weekend Closures, but it’ll still be a real pain for many local residents: Metro announced this morning that service between Stadium-Armory and New Carrollton on the Orange Line and between Stadium-Armory and Benning Road on the Blue Line will be shut down during the first weekend in March.
Beginning on Friday, March 4 at 10 p.m. and lasting until closing on Sunday, March 6, Minnesota Avenue, Deanwood, Cheverly, Landover and New Carrollton will all be closed. (Stadium-Armory and Benning Road, however, will remain open — trains will just be terminating service at both stations.) Metro workers will be working on several maintenance projects, including repairs on the aerial structure outside the Cheverly station, train control upgrades outside the Stadium-Armory Metrorail station, and the installation of 6,000 feet of cellular communication cables, 2,000 feet of track, 380 insulators, 1,400 rail ties and 400 track fasteners. The work is part of the fulfillment of recommendations made by the National Transportation Safety Board.
Metro plans to operate shuttle buses, including an express option between Stadium-Armory and New Carrollton. More information on those shuttles is available here.
