With another successful Exposed opening in the books, DCist can now turn our focus to one of our favorite parts of spring. Join Team DCist on Saturday, April 16, as we volunteer during Greater DC Cares’ Servathon 2011! We’ll be sprucing up the Browne Education Campus in the Carver/Langston neighborhood, just east of Trinidad and the Atlas District, painting the school in vibrant colors to give “a comprehensive new look to instill pride in its students and to make students, staff and visitors to feel welcome and energized as soon as they walk through the school doors.”
Register for our team and you’ll join a couple dozen DCist writers and readers with paintbrush in hand. Volunteers make a minimum contribution of $25 to share project costs and seek friends to kick a little in on top of that towards Greater DC Cares’ cause of connecting volunteers with community non-profits throughout the year. Last year, Team DCist clocked in with the largest team (54 people) and largest team fundraising total — over $2,600. ‘Cause that’s how we roll.
Let’s do it again this year! Spots at Browne are limited, so if you want in, you’d better sign up today! If our response is large enough, we may select an additional project. If you can’t come out, please consider making a small donation in the name of the team or your favorite team member. Or start your own team or volunteer on your own and select one of Servathon’s numerous other cool projects: how does clearing brush and weeds from covered gravestones at Glenwood Cemetery sound to you?
Our project, painting the walls at Brown Education Campus, is somewhat Metro accessible: it’s 1.2 miles from the Stadium-Armory Metro, 0.85 miles from the nearest Bikeshare dock, the X2 and X8 bus drop off nearby, and we might be able to arrange some carpools. Volunteering on the the day will run from 9:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m, followed by an afterparty for the thousands of volunteers working on projects that day throughout the region.
Along with last year, check out all the fun we had together in years past. Now go register!
