Like many Washingtonians, former D.C. Councilmember Carol Schwartz isn’t happy with the way the federal government is giving the ol’ one-two to the District. But is Schwartz going to be satisfied with simply repeating the several hours in holding and misdeameanor charges cropped up by Mayor Vince Gray, a few current members of the Council and several others last Monday? No way!

In fact, she wants to take it up a notch. In a letter sent to the editors of the Washington Post, Schwartz indicates that she’s ready to face down federal penalties for the cause.

Dramatic action is needed. Taking to the streets and getting arrested is one such action, and it is fine with me. But better still would be taking “no taxation without representation” literally, the way our forefathers and foremothers did. Next year at tax time, if I am still denied my right to vote in Congress, and no real movement is afoot, I am ready to deny the federal government my taxes. I will look at setting aside my taxes in an escrow account. I hope my fellow disenfranchised D.C. residents will join me in this effort.

Hmm. Perhaps Schwartz would like to ask one of her former colleagues how not paying federal income taxes worked out for him?
