Mayor Vince Gray has reportedly relieved Leon Swain Jr. of his duties as chairman of the D.C. Taxicab Commission.

Swain, who took the job in July 2007 and led the agency as the city transitioned from the zone system to meters, was more often in the news as the public face of an oftdysfunctional commission or for assisting authorities during a federal bribery investigation than he was because of any progressive policies he installed during his tenure. One can only hope that the next commissioner will bring some new ideas to the table, since cab complaints never seem to dry up.

Swain, meanwhile, probably won’t be struggling to occupy his time: he serves on the Board of Directors of United Medical Center and is also on the Naylor Gardens Cooperative Housing Board of Directors. He’s also served as vice chair of Advisory Neighborhood Commission 8E-05 in the past.
