President Obama has declared this week National Transportation Week — but perhaps of greater interest to Washingtonians is that this week is also Bike to Work Week, which culminates with Friday’s Bike to Work Day.

Bike to Work Day is probably the biggest cycling day on the District’s calendar — over 8,000 people have registered to participate this year, and organizers are aiming for 10,000 — and there’s no doubt that Capital Bikeshare will be in very high demand. DDOT is warning people to be “prepared for higher usage,” but they will be operating two bike corrals on Friday morning — between 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the 14th and D Street, NW station, and beginning at 6:30 a.m. at the Lynn and 19th Street N. station in Rosslyn — so those riding Bikeshare to work downtown or in Rosslyn won’t need to endlessly search for an open dock.

The Washington Area Bicyclists Association (WABA) also has several events planned for Friday and the weekend — like pitstops where bikers can meet up before heading into the office — and has even teamed up with Bike and Roll to offer free bike rentals for the morning rush.
