Photo by RogueAngel. It’s been a painful 2011 for Blue and Orange Line riders, what with more than on weekend project that has cut the lines in two. That trend will continue over the Memorial Day weekend, I’m afraid: the transit agency outlined its holiday weekend plans today, which includes the closure of four D.C. stations.
Between at 10 p.m. on Friday, May 27 and ending at closing on Monday, May 30, WMATA will offer no train service between the Federal Center SW and Minnesota Avenue and Benning Road Metrorail stations. The four stations between — Capitol South, Eastern Market, Potomac Avenue and Stadium-Armory — will all be closed for the entirety of the three-day weekend. The closures will allow Metro to continue its rigorous “state of good repair” program — the agency says that over Memorial Day, it will “replace four track switches at the Eastern Market Metrorail station, replace 4,700 fasteners, make repairs to the aerial structure outside the Stadium-Armory Metrorail station, lay over 5 miles of communications cable to upgrade cell phone access throughout the Metrorail system and make repairs to 21 escalators and 8 elevators.”
Those who have had weekend plans cut into because of Orange and Blue Line shutdowns so far this year already know the drill — long waits for free shuttle buses, and so forth. But Memorial Day weekend is a busy one around the area, especially for tourists: RFK Stadium is hosting the Stars, Stripes and Spokes motorcycle event, which is expected to draw several thousand people. There are several Memorial Day-related events, like the annual parade on Monday, for which organizers are encouraging the use of public transportation.
All the details on the Memorial Day closures can be found at Metro’s website.
