FRIDAY

THEATER: Get a glimpse of this year’s Fringe Festival at this evening’s Preview Night, which will feature a selection of 2 to 5 minute excerpts from the 30 plays in this year’s festival. Head to the The Baldacchino Gypsy Tent Bar (607 New York Avenue NW) as early as 5:30 p.m. The show starts at 7 p.m. Free.

MOVIE: The AFI Silver Theatre’s (8633 Colesville Road, Silver Spring) Totally Awesome ’80s movie series begins today with Back to the Future II at 4:30 p.m. and Tron (in 70mm) at 7 p.m. Or head over on Saturday for The Karate Kid at 12:30 p.m. The series continues through September 7. $11 each film.

>> Caddyshack hits the screen tonight at the Rosslyn Outdoor Film Festival (Gateway Park, 1300 Lee Highway, Arlington). Dusk. Free.

MUSIC: Jimmy Chamberlin, former drummer for the Smashing Pumpkins, now performs with Skysaw who are playing the Black Cat (1811 14th Street NW) tonight. Cobra Collective and The Chance open. 9 p.m. $13.

>> The No Scrubs: 90’s Dance Party is back at the 9:30 Club (815 V Street NW) tonight, featuring DJs Will Eastman and Brian Billion. 9 p.m. $15.

MUSEUM: Starting today and continuing through September 5, the Newseum (555 Pennsylvania Avenue NW) is waiving fees for kids (18 and under) who visit with one paying adult ($21.95). This deal is good for up to 10 kids per adult.

SATURDAY

FESTIVAL: Catch a full weekend of events at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, featuring Colombia, Peace Corps and Rhythm and Blues. During the day Saturday, see cooking demonstrations, ceremonial dances and a number of performances. The day concludes with two concerts from 6-8 p.m.: An Evening with Swamp Dogg and Chirimía la Contundencia Grupo Cimarrón. 11 a.m.- 8 p.m. Free.

FOOD & DRINK: Grillfish (1200 New Hampshire Avenue NW) presents Bayfest, a lunch celebration of a selection of Maryland favorites, including oysters on the half shell, soft shell crab sandwiches, oyster po’boys, grilled corn and other sides, homemade ice cream sandwiches, beer, wine and Old Bay Bloody Marys. 11:30 a.m.-4 p.m.

MUSIC: R. Kelly, equipped with his latest album Love Letter, performs at the Verizon Center (601 F Street NW) Saturday night. Then again, you could always skip the show and just stay home and watch
Trapped in the Closet. 8 p.m. $78-$103.

>> South African fusion group Freshlyground brings their North America tour to the Black Cat (1811 14th Street NW) Saturday. 9 p.m. $20 in advance, $25 day-of.

MOVIE: Grab a date and catch a Dinner & A Movie featuring Kissed By Lightning, which is based on an Iroquois story, Saturday at the National Museum of the American Indian (300 Maryland Avenue SW). Dinner is from 5-6:30 p.m. and the movie starts at 7 p.m. Dinner is a la carte, the movie is free.

>> The Raspberry Brothers pair live comedy with a screening of The Terminator at the Arlington Cinema and Drafthouse (2903 Columbia Pike, Arlington) Saturday. 9:55 p.m. $15.

SUNDAY

MONDAY:

MUSIC: A Capitol Fourth, a concert and Independence celebration featuring Josh Groban, Steve Martin, the National Symphony Orchestra and many others takes place on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol on Monday. Gates open at 3 p.m. and the concert starts at 8 p.m. PBS will also be broadcasting the event. Free.

>> 40 bands perform on 5 stages at the National Freedom Fest at The Yards Park (10 Water Street SE). Sunday 2-9 p.m. and Monday 1-9 p.m. $24.99-$39.99.

PARADE: The National Independence Day Parade (starts at Constitution Avenue and 7th Street) marches drum corps, floats, balloons, horses and more through the streets this Monday beginning at 11:45 a.m.

FOOD & DRINK: Eat, drink and be merry with DJs, food and DC Brau brews at the Independence Grillin’ with DC Brau event at DC9 (1940 9th Street NW). 2-10 p.m. $4 beers, free admission.
