TUESDAY
Black metal is not typically a genre in which bands will appeal to anyone outside of dedicated metal heads. Yet, Liturgy’s ability to pull from alternate sources of noisemaking for a decidedly unique sound means that their recently released Aesthethica has deservedly received rave reviews across the board. Check them out at DC9 with Baltimore noise punks Dope Body and the oddly named Goldmansacks.com. $10, 8:30 p.m.
Black Cat: John Maus, Puro Instinct, Geneva Jacuzzi. $12, 8:30 p.m.
WEDNESDAY
If nothing else, Nobunny would be the most visually exciting act on the agenda this week. Justin Champlin, the brains behind Nobunny, often dresses in — surprise surprise — a bunny mask, which may be accentuated with trashbags and other acoutrements…or little else. But don’t just go for the spectacle! His latest album was released on Goner Records, reliable outpost for all things garage rock — so the songs are pretty good, too. Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb opens at Black Cat. $10, 9 p.m.
DC9: The Courtesans, SoSoSo. $8, 9 p.m.
Wolf Trap: k.d. lang and the Siss Boom Bang, The Belle Brigade. $25 lawn, $45 in house, 8 p.m.
THURSDAY
Fort Reno took Monday off, wishing us a Happy Fireworks Day — but they’re back with another strong group of performers on Thursday: The Blackberry Belles, Cane & The Sticks and Wild Fruit. Free, 7:15 p.m.
FRIDAY
We’ll be the first to admit that we don’t know much about Dance for the Dying, who are holding their EP release at Red Palace on Friday night, but the concept sounds reliable enough. They play synthy dance-pop that draws from the music of the ’80s and ’90s. Plus, we know their openers Hiding Places and Loose Lips will be impressive in and of themselves. $8, 9:30 p.m.
Another local act that we know will put in a strong showing, shambolic duo Thee Lolitas, will be playing across town at the Black Cat, opening for The Thrilltones — who are very much a ska band. $10, 9 p.m.
SATURDAY
In the most meta show of the year, Animal Collective will be playing at Merriweather Post Pavilion, the namesake of their last album. That said, fans shouldn’t expect to hear too many songs from 2009’s breakthrough masterpiece. Based on festival sets that they’ve performed thus far, Animal Collective (which has swelled to a quartet again) has returned to form in that they’re playing songs that have yet to see the light of day in a recorded format. They’re also bringing along old friends and former tourmates Black Dice as openers, as well as Dirty Projectors crooner Angel Deradoorian. Still, the thought of listening to “Summertime Clothes” while wearing some summertime clothes isn’t too far-fetched.
Velvet Lounge: The Caribbean, Archeology, The Loom, Mike Boggs of We Were Pirates. $8, 10 p.m.
Rock and Roll Hotel: The Vita Ruins, Snowmine, Miyazaki. $10, 9 p.m.
9:30 Club: Rx Bandits, Maps & Atlases, Zechs Marquise. $20, 5 p.m.
SUNDAY
A lot of people have recently taken up the mentality of making music that would fit a BBQ on the beach. However, instead of relying on fuzz and feedback to make their music sound like a lemonade in the shade, Real Estate has lyrical content about such suburban drinks and trips along the ocean front. They’ll be performing at the Red Palace with another Underwater Peoples affiliate: talented guitarist Andrew Cedermark, as well as Dent May. 8:30 p.m., $14.
Can you go wrong if the name of your music festival is CLITfest? Answer: absolutely not. The incendiary sounding event (which stands for Combating Latent Inequality Together) will be at the Black Cat benefitting HIPS (Helping Individual Prostitutes Survive) and will feature music from The Ambulars, Zombie Dogs, Emilyn Brodsky, Cojoba, Cat Vet, Lechuza, Death First and Foul Crux. $10, 3 p.m.
Wolf Trap: Bela Fleck and the Original Flecktones, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Abigail Washburn & The Village. $40 in house, $25 lawn, 7 p.m.
