Oooh, shiny: WMATA revealed renderings of its newest rail cars today. So dubbed the 7000 series, the 428 cars will be purchased at a cost of $886 million and are scheduled to roll out — 300 to replace the system’s oldest cars, the rest dedicated to the new Dulles extension — sometime between 2013 and 2016.

WMATA had asked the public for suggestions for the new fleet last November — so, what’s in these babies?

Well, for starters, the interior looks vastly different than Metro’s current fleet — obviously, it’s going to take a little while to get used to the sleek granite look that’s replacing the 70s-tastic orange, yellow and brown and ’90s-tastic blue, red and white looks that we’ve rode on for so long. Other features of note in the new trains: more lighting, seats, signage, things to hold on to; fewer poles and operator cabins; and, of course, no carpeting whatsoever.

The Post got the chance to head out to New Carrollton and check out the interior of one of WMATA’s newest rail cars — check out their video tour below.

Based on the sneak peek, what do you think? Better? Worse? Meh?
