“I’m sorry, but it’s done! What do you want me to do about it now?”

“Well, stop eating her, for one thing.”

Exchanges like that let you know the madcap feel of Fat Men In Skirts, Molotov Theatre Group’s creepy, disgusting and darkly funny entrant into this year’s Fringe festival. The estranged wife of a filmmaker (K. Clare Johnson) and her strange, stuttering son Bishop (Matthew Marcus) get stranded on an island after a plane crash. They spend years with only their dead co-passengers for company (and sustenance). Meanwhile, the philandering filmmaker (Dave Gamble) and his mistress (Katie Culligan) cope with life back at home without them. Bring the quartet back together, and we find just how much Bishop and Phillis have been screwed up by their time on the island.

Fat Men strikes just the right tone for a Fringe play — it’s edgy, raw and a little nonsensical. Molotov offers some impressive stage combat and some true gross-out effects. The women of the show have great comic timing, but the real discovery of Fat Men is Marcus. As we uneasily watch his transition from uncertain, maladjusted young boy to virile, disturbed teenager, Marcus is commanding, spooky and riveting. Even (or especially) with fake blood dripping down the side of his mouth.

Fat Men In Skirts has 13 remaining performances, listed here. Tickets are available online.
