“The Malachite Palace”.

A young princess is trapped in a tower. (Well, maybe not so much trapped as highly discouraged by her royal family from leaving the palace.) Will her friendship with a more daring bird convince her to flee her cage?

It’s the premise of The Malachite Palace, Wit’s End Puppets’ entry into this year’s Fringe festival. Wendy Nogales narrates the tale, which is brought to life through both traditional and shadow-style puppetry.

With a 36-minute running time and a whimsical feel, Malachite is a good choice for young audiences, who should be able to follow the story’s straightforward plot. Adults can appreciate the work’s seamless transitions from English to Spanish dialogue, as well as the lovely silhouette sets which demonstrate the action behind the palace walls, though some may find the story (adapted from the picture book “Alma Flor Ada”) a bit too slight.

The Malachite Palace has three remaining performances: July 13, 14 and 23. Tickets are available online.
