Photo by igotsidetrackded.Good morning, Washington. It’s going to be hot today, people. So hot, that discussing how hot it’ll be is basically a non-starter. Take, for example, this explanation of what heat index actually is. It should be helpful. But no — it just reminds us all that the next time we’ll go outside, we’ll probably be swimming upstream against all this godforsaken humidity. The worst part? It’s not going to get any better anytime soon. Welcome to summer!
Groomes Cops To Cheating: In responding to allegations that some of her officers cheated on exams last fall, Metropolitan Police Department Chief Cathy Lanier said that “no official obtained or shared the answer key.” Assistant Chief Dianne Groomes says otherwise, however — Groomes told the Washington City Paper yesterday that she “printed out the answers, and I sent them out,” and told the officers to “handle it.” Lanier had attempted to tamp down controversy by explaining that the test in question was open-book, but Groomes, who was disciplined for her role in the compromising, came totally clean. “Like I said, I did what I did. … I react sometimes. I’m impulsive. I just react.”
Police Seek Columbia Heights Shooter: Yesterday, D.C. police responded to the scene of an early evening shooting on Columbia Road NW near 15th Street. A man was shot, but was found breathing and is expected to survive; the shooter remains at-large, and the reasons for the violence unknown. The incident did have an adverse effect on rush-hour traffic — Columbia Road was blocked off for a time while police investigated and searched for the perpetrator.
MWAA Plans Bigger Meeting Space: With a vote on the potential slashing of the Dulles rail project’s budget looming, should the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority be spending millions of dollars on a massive expansion of its headquarters? That’s the question posed by the Washington Post this morning, as the paper has details on a $7.2 million transformation of the MWAA’s meeting space at National Airport. The Authority believes that the new digs would help the public follow along with meetings, and notes that the expansion was proposed before the fight over the Dulles rail budget — but some, like Virginia congressman Tom Davis, argue that it’s bad optics.
