This week we were saddened to hear that, for the sixth time, Mei Xiang did not have a Butterstick in the oven. But our Editor-in-Chief was right in conjecturing that a few cuddly pictures would pop up to tamp down some of the sturm und drang that would result from the disappointing news. First some cheetah cub photos, now a handful of pics of a pair of red pandas born last month at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Front Royal, Va. According to the National Zoo, that brings the total up to four cubs born this year, which is uplifting considering this time last year we mourned the loss of a red panda. Still cute and adorable, we’re not sure these cubs are having the jolliest of times during this medical exam — they’re just like us!
