NBC Washington reports that with Capital Bikeshare’s continued expansion, it’s likely that more and more helmetless bicyclists are taking to the streets. In response, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is buying 500 helmets to give to frequent riders.
D.C. doesn’t require bicyclists to wear helmets unless they’re 16 and younger.
“We’ve had trouble finding ways to get helmets to everyday users,” said Chris Holben, DDOT Bikeshare project manager.
The city is also launching a pilot program for tourists, teaming up with hotels to lend out helmets to guests.
