Photo by ok-oyot.Good morning, Washington. Even the deer are after Tommy Wells, it seems. The Ward 6 Councilmember is currently stuck in Minnesota, after a deer lept in front of his wife’s Toyota Prius while Wells was driving it on vacation. Tim Craig reports that the deer did a real number on the car, pushing the radiator into the engine. Wells was not injured and credited the Prius with keeping him safe — Blue Oyster Cult would be proud.
Viola Drath Murder Case Is A Whopper: The world is covering the Viola Drath murder case, or so it seems. But most of the focus is on the husband of the 91-year-old journalist and socialite. The Washington Post (which assigned seven reporters to contribute to its latest dispatch on the story) reports that Albrecht Gero Muth, Drath’s 44-years-younger husband, had a history with domestic violence. Muth admitted to the Post that he believes he is the lone suspect in the homicide investigation, and his past — he married Drath 21 years ago, left her to live with a man he was romantically involved with, then, according to court records, threatened both him and, later, Drath — is really something. Neighbors of the Q Street residence where Drath was found dead provide even more color, including about Muth — who claims to be a brigadier general in the Iraqi army — and his unique manner of dress.
Oil Spills Into Anacostia River: More depressing pollution in the Anacostia River — last night, environmental authorities laid down booms to contain a petroleum product which seeped into the river between the 11th Street Bridge and New York Avenue. Authorities are unsure what caused the leak, but the Coast Guard, the D.C. Department of the Environment and the Environmental Protection Agency are investigating.
Hoo Boy: An American University student pens a post on being the “White Girl in Southeast DC” and the “white bubble”; reaction, as you can imagine, was brisk and emotional.

This Day in DCist: Last year, Nationals Park was a “cauldron of political activity and protest, a venue for gender politics discourse and a theater for civil disobedience,” opposition to same sex marriage rallied at the Capitol and we learned the Adams Morgan Blockbuster was closing.
