Photo by spiggycat.UPDATE (1:05 p.m.): The store’s owner, Pixie Windsor, got in touch with us this afternoon — and those of you in Adams Morgan and Bloomingdale could be the lucky recipients of a relocated Miss Pixie’s.
“I’ve been actively looking for three months,” Windsor said, who noted that the rent on her 14th Street space — which she admitted “couldn’t be more perfect” — was slated to quadruple. Windsor, who was in good spirits and doesn’t hold any grudges about the financial situation the store is in, also noted that she was looking at places around Mid City, though prices are high all along the 14th Street corridor.
Of course, there’s always the chance that Miss Pixie’s landlord won’t be able to find a new tenant at the rate they’re asking. And if that’s the case, “there’s a real strong chance that the landlord will let us stay,” Windsor said.
You’ll have to excuse me — this Harry Jaffe column on the transformation of the 14th Street NW corridor from, in the headline’s words, “Riot corridor” to “condo canyon,” was not at the top of my morning reading list. (You know, there’s a hurricane a-comin’, after all.) But wouldn’t you know it, the column actually breaks some retail news — albeit in the second-to-last graf: Miss Pixie’s Furnishings and Whatnot, the venerable furniture and knickknack shop will apparently be closing up shop next March, due to increasing rents.
Reports Jaffe:
Pixie Windsor, who has run Miss Pixie’s furniture store down the street for almost four years, is preparing to move. Her lease runs out in March, and the rent will rise. “We come in and make a place cool and popular,” she says, “then they kick us out. That’s the way it works.”
That’s a real bummer for Mid-City residents. Miss Pixie’s — which moved to the corridor in 2008 from its previous location on 18th Street NW — is one of the premier spots on any Washingtonian’s list of spots that prove to out-of-towners that we’re not all just a bunch of stodgy, white collar pencil pushers. (And if the store does indeed pack it up to another part of town, this editor will sorely miss his traditional weekend window-shopping.)
We’ve got a call in with the store to try and get more details about the potential move and where ownership may be looking to relocate — if and when they respond, we’ll be sure to update this post.
