Buenos Dias, Washington. WTOP reports that as part of a campaign to attract more Hispanic fans, the Washington Redskins have rolled out a Spanish-language version of their fight song. Known as “Viva Los Redskins,” the song is roughly a word-for-word translation, but also jazzes up the old tune with Latin beats. (You can listen here.) The song may well work to attract more Hispanic fans, until Dan Snyder invariably slaps them with a lawsuit for criticizing the team and his ownership of it.
A Partial Victory for D.C. Autonomy: It’s a pretty low bar these days, but the District’s right to govern itself gained a small victory when a spending bill for the city moved out of a Senate subcommittee without any of the usual noxious riders that stop us from using our own money on things like abortions for low-income women, writes The Washington Times. Of course, the measure still has to go to the full Senate Appropriations Committee and then be squared with a House spending bill that does include the prohibition on the use of local funds for abortions. In a statement yesterday evening, Mayor Vince Gray thanked congressional allies while pushing for continued respect for the District prerogatives. “I urge all Members of Congress to refrain from restricting our ability to provide services and programs to residents, including reproductive services and lifesaving needle exchange,” he said.
What’s Come Of Our Kids?: The Examiner writes that SAT scores fell both locally and nationally, with students in Montgomery County seeing a 10-point drop, finishing at 1,637, from their record-breaking 2010 scores. Students in Fairfax County saw a nine-point drop, while public school students in the District only dropped a point, scoring 1,120 out of the possible 2,400. Some education experts expressed concerns, saying that a score of 1,550 was a basic benchmark.
At Least Car-Driving Metro Officials Go Green: The Examiner’s Kytja Weir keeps digging into the take-home cars that Metro officials get, reporting today that all but one of them get hybrid Ford Escapes. No word on how fully-loaded, though.
Briefly Noted: Medical marijuana entrepreneurs get an extra two weeks to file applications for cultivation centers … Our hunch was right: Albrecht Muth likely won’t be afforded POW status … Most Virginians like Gov. Bob McDonnell, support restrictions on abortion clinics … Deadline for BRAC realignments extended.
This Day in DCist: On this day in 2010, Councilmember Phil Mendelson (D-At Large) breathed a sigh of relief after winning re-election and Michelle Rhee didn’t resign. In 2009, the Black Cat dumped Ticketmaster and the last of Capitol Hill’s smoking rooms closed.
