The lions’ birthday cake was made of cow femur, shaved beef and cow blood.

Seven young lions at the National Zoo celebrated their first birthdays today the only way they knew how — by chewing through a 50-pound birthday cake made of ice, two cow femurs, five pounds of shaved beef, and a half-gallon of cow blood. (The guests, on the other hand, got nothing.) The lions also played with seven gift boxes that each contained individual-sized “bloodcicles” made of shaved beef and a piece of oxtail.

The young lions were born in two litters last year. John, Lelie, Fahari, and Zuri were born to mother Shera in late August, while Neba gave birth to Baruti, Aslan and Lusaka about a month later. All seven were sired by father Luke.
