Having alienated just about anyone who believes in a free press, Washington R******s owner Dan Snyder has turned his sights on Hispanic fans and now environmentalists.
Yesterday Snyder and executives from power company NRG unveiled a new installation of solar panels outside of FedEx Field, the largest of its kind at an NFL stadium. According to a press release, the 8,000 solar panels will provide 20 percent of the stadium’s power on game day and 100 percent on non-game days, while offering shade to 841 cars in the parking lot. Moreover, the panels will power 10 charging stations for electric cars like the Chevy Volt. According to the team, the power generated by the panels will help keep 1,780 metric tons of carbon out of the atmosphere each year, roughly what 349 cars would produce.
The project was hatched between NRG and the Redskins in June, and Snyder recently touted his environmental bona fides during an interview with The New York Times. “This has nothing to do with politics. It’s about the future. And if you look at what we’ve done, I mean, it is mind-boggling to me, No. 1, how beautiful it is. And just think, if you’re driving here with your Chevy Volt, we have pumps so we can pump you right there. That is too cool,” he said.
