Carmela Dela Rosa

ORIGINAL POST: This afternoon, a Fairfax County jury found Carmela Dela Rosa guilty of first-degree murder, determining that clearly understood what she was doing when she dropped her 2-year-old granddaughter off a sixth-story elevated bridge at Tysons Corner Center last year.

Dela Rosa had pursued an insanity defense. During the trial, her attorney presented witnesses who attested that Dela Rosa had suffered from severe depression and was suicidal in the months leading up to the incident. They also argued that the 50-year-old was delusional on the day of the toddler’s death. Prosecutors countered that Dela Rosa’s decision to drop the child to her death was motivated by her hatred of the girl’s father, who had impregnated Dela Rosa’s daughter out of wedlock; they also brought the toddler’s parents to the stand for an emotional round of testimony. After the week-long trial, the jury of eight men and four women deliberated for several hours before reaching the verdict.

Dela Rosa, 50, could face life in prison upon sentencing; testimony in the sentencing portion of the trial began immediately following the rendering of the verdict.

UPDATE (5:10 p.m.): Dela Rosa was sentenced to 35 years in prison this afternoon.
