UPDATE (6:10 p.m.): We’ve now gotten word that the person who was struck by the train has been removed from the track, and people on the powerless train will soon be allowed to disembark. The Clarendon station could be closed for some time, however, so we’d definitely recommend either waiting it out, grabbing a cab, or any solution that does not involve expecting Orange Line service to be operating past Court House with any regularity for a little while.

ORIGINAL POST: If you’re still at work and usually take the Orange or Blue Lines home through Clarendon, might we suggest making happy hour plans? Service on both lines has been interrupted since about 5 p.m., after a person was struck by a train near the stop. Emergency crews have been dispatched to remove the person, who was stuck underneath the train, but is reportedly still alive.

Early indications are that the person placed themselves in front of a train intentionally, but WMATA is still investigating.

We’d expect major delays for some time, based on the reports that are coming in regarding the scope of the incident. If you use the Blue Line, Metro is recommending taking the Yellow Line to L’Enfant, then transferring there to avoid the backup. There are shuttle buses being established between Rosslyn and Ballston on the Orange Line.

And if you’re upset about the delay, it could always be worse: it appears as if there are several people who are stuck on the train that hit the person, which is now powerless and air conditioning-less while the situation is being resolved.
