While the city’s homicide rate will get most of the attention as we enter the homestretch of 2011, the frequency of other crimes is certainly worth keeping an eye on. Take robbery, for example: over the weekend, police reported that at least five people were robbed, some at gunpoint, at various locations in several of the city’s busiest neighborhoods.

Robberies in Dupont Circle, Mid City, Columbia Heights, Logan Circle and near Howard University were reported between the wee hours of Sunday morning and yesterday afternoon. No one was injured in any of the five robberies. It was a busy weekend in the city core — with Howard homecoming activities bringing lots of foot traffic to the streets — so its not surprising that thieves may have been looking to take advantage.

A recent uptick in property crime and robberies have some in the District concerned. According to MPD statistics, robberies and burglaries have remained level year-to-date over 2010 figures, but reports of general theft have increased 12 percent over last year.
