On Wednesday, President Barack Obama will make another pitch for his American Jobs Act by focusing on a local infrastructure project that could benefit under the plan: the Key Bridge.
Obama will deliver a speech in the Georgetown Waterfront Park, where he will again prod Congress into passing the $447 billion jobs act, which includes significant investments in infrastructure projects across the country. The Key Bridge, which was recently identified as one of the region’s 215 structurally deficient bridges, could qualify for upgrades under the $387 million that the White House says would be available to the District under the plan. The bridge handles some 61,000 car trips a day.
According to the District Department of Transportation, other bridges were considered for funding, but the rehabilitation of the Key Bridge would move fastest.
This certainly won’t be the first time that Obama has used our fair city to make a broader national point — he recently delivered his annual back to school speech at Benjamin Banneker Academic High School in Columbia Heights.
Speaking of new infrastructure, the Georgetown Waterfront Park was recently finished after years of rehabilitation work.
