The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has one version of Friday night’s events involving three people who were struck by a car while protesting with hundreds of others outside a conservative gathering at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. The protesters have another.

MPD said the driver, 38-year-old Shawn Valentine of Clinton, Md., was not cited because he had a green light when his vehicle struck three people at around 10 p.m., and the protesters were in violation for blocking the roadway. MPD said witnesses told police the three pedestrians “either ran toward or jumped in front of the moving vehicle” and one leaped onto the hood of the car.

Ward 6 Councilmember Tommy Wells, who went to the scene, told the Washington Post, “My understanding is that the driver was not impaired. He was scared when people began jumping up and down on his car…”

But after a Saturday evening press conference, and an interview with WJLA, the victims are speaking out and telling a different story. From WJLA’s Mike Conneen:

ABC7’s Mike Conneen talked with the protesters who were hit by the car, a family from Dayton, Ohio, including a 36-year-old pregnant woman and a 13-year old boy. “Some cars would turn around and some would wait till we got out of the way,” said Heidi Sippel. “And this one didn’t do either. He just gunned it for us.”

All three members of the Sippel family were cited for walking against a do-not-walk sign and obstructing traffic. They said they’ll fight the tickets.

Occupy D.C. issued a statement Saturday which said that the driver hit another demonstrator before the Sippel family. At the press conference, Assistant Police Chief Lamar Greene said he didn’t know about another incident.

All three members of the Sippel family were taken to area hospitals after the incident and released. In total, six people from the Occupy D.C. movement were arrested or ticketed Friday.
