The National Zoo has certainly made an event of the periodic namings of their adorable baby animals. It has teamed up with media outlets and even foreign governments to draw up lists of names for everything from anteaters to lions, those of which are subsequently put to a public vote.

Now the zoo is working with I Can Haz Cheezburger — yep, the same folks that made money off of the LOLcat meme — to pick names for two cheetah cubs born in May at the zoo’s research center in Front Royal, Virginia.

Starting today, I Can Has Cheezburger will post a daily image of a cheetah cub at noon, to which anyone can submit a funny caption and a proposed name. The contest runs through Sunday, after which the zoo will pick up to 10 possible names, or five per cheetah cub. Voting will take place on December 20, and the people whose proposed names win are eligible for prizes. (More info in the video below, along with adorable shots of the cheetah cubs.)

Before you go and try to be all clever, remember this — this is the zoo we’re talking about, so keep things family-appropriate. As much as we’d love for a cheetah to be named Sir Mauls A Lot or I Can Has Cheetahburger, it’s not likely not to happen. (Cuddles McCheetah is fair game.) A few rules to observe:

Submitted captions must not (i) contain material that violates or infringes another person’s rights, including but not limited to privacy, publicity or intellectual property rights, or that constitutes copyright infringement; (ii) contain any commercial, advertising content or any other third-party brand names, logos or trademarks; or (iii) make any references to alcoholic beverages, tobacco, drug paraphernalia, or firearms.

Do your best, D.C.
