TUESDAY
While the term “indefinate hiatus” might range from a couple of months (TV on the Radio) to nine years and WE ARE STILL WAITING (Fugazi), it’s still an unwelcome word pairing. This time the parting band in question is Thursday, who after 14 years, seven albums and one excellent Sigur Rós cover have decided to part ways for an undisclosed amount of time. As such, this final (for now?) show at the 9:30 Club with four other bands—Screaming Females, mewithoutyou, Make Do and Mend and Aficionado—should be a memorable one. Although, in all fairness, there’s no such thing as an unmemorable Screaming Females set. $16, 6 p.m.
Iota: Chopteeth Afrofunk Big Band. $15, 8:30 p.m.
WEDNESDAY
While certainly not reclusive, Ian Svenonius retains an air of mystery that sets him apart from, well, anyone. Hell, he was channeling John Bonham at the last performance of his that we saw and then there was that stint of his as cruise director. So, regardless of what he does onstage with Chain & the Gang at the Black Cat, at least the audience can count on being mesmerized. Heavy Breathing opens. $10, 8 p.m.
U Street Music Hall: The Whale/Future Times Holiday Party. Free, 10 p.m.
THURSDAY
Make the hike out to downtown Silver Spring to the Fillmore and see The Roots perform in what is becoming an annual year-end two-night stand in the metro area. Let’s just hope that they don’t have to deal with a blizzard this year. $45, 8 p.m.
FRIDAY
Between Moombahton Massive and the Future Times Holiday party, your dancing needs should be covered this week. Unless, of course, you’d prefer big bands playing salsa mixed with Afro-Cuban rhythms to DJs. In which case, Bio Ritmo will be playing at the Black Cat with Alma Tropicalia. $15, 9 p.m.
Rock and Roll Hotel: Beach Week, Blackberry Belles, Teen Mom. $10, 9 p.m.
SATURDAY
New Year’s Eve appears to be the only night of Drive-By Truckers’ three night run at the 9:30 Club that has not sold out. However, considering that it’s a New Year’s Eve show with Booker T (that will STILL let out before the ball drops), that bright yellow “Buy Tix” icon will not be lit for long, so if you’ve been toying with the idea of going, it’d be best to get on that. $55, 8 p.m.
U Street Music Hall: Moombahton Massive X. $20 advance tickets, 9 p.m.
The Lab: The Beanstalk Library and Olivia Mancini & The Mates, Maple, 3 Foot Leash. $10, 8 p.m.
SUNDAY
The only person crazy to play on sanctioned Rest ‘n’ Relaxation day is the local rapper who takes #nodaysoff. That’d be Wale who will be playing to whomever can get their hungover asses to the Fillmore to see him and Black Cobain. $35, 8 p.m.
