D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier announced this morning that 19-year-old Michael Davis was arrested last night in Petworth after attacking a woman with a hammer.

Regardless, she hesitated to say that he was responsible for three recent attacks in the area—including one that killed Gary Dederichs, a 66-year-old visitor from Denver, earlier this week—but added that police were investigating any links between the attacks.

At a press conference, Lanier said that police patrolling the neighborhood heard a woman scream and saw Davis run down and alley and dump a bag. The bag was recovered and found to contain a hammer, which police say was used to attack the woman. Davis will be charged with aggravated assault in the attack.

Lanier said that the 19-year-old woman attacked last night suffered a “serious head injury” but remained in stable condition at a local hospital; two other victims are similarly hospitalized with head injuries from the attacks. The attacks had put Petworth residents on edge this week, and they had been warned not to walk outside alone.
