It’s been a long time since we’ve been the nation’s murder capital, but that’s not to say that killings don’t still happen, that they don’t shock us and they aren’t used as a measure of how good or bad other things are going.

To that end, crime-tracking website Burgersub.org has mapped all the 1,116 murders that took place in D.C. from 2005 to 2011.

Not surprisingly, the map shows what we’ve all long known—the majority of the city’s murders are clustered in parts of Ward 5 and east of the Anacostia River, while fewer than 10 happened west of Rock Creek Park.

Homicides in D.C. have steadily declined since 2008, and last year they hit a 50-year low. So far this year there have been 30 killings, 25 percent fewer than at the same time in 2011.
