It looks like Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) needs to get herself a good local accountant.
The Kansas City Star reports that McCaskill paid the property taxes on her D.C. condo late last fall, the second time in as many years that she’s been tardy on the payments:
Records show that the Missouri Democrat missed the fall 2011 deadline by about three weeks. McCaskill paid $197 in penalties and interest on top of the $1,514 in taxes owed for half the year.
McCaskill also was about a month late paying her spring 2010 property tax bill on the condo. She paid $198 in penalties and interest that time. Records show she also paid a fine and interest for a late payment in 2008.
“Unlike other jurisdictions that bill just once a year, they bill twice a year,” McCaskill said. “Somehow the second bill that came to my condo in D.C. slipped through the cracks, and it got paid late.”
McCaskill owns a condo on H Street NW just beyond Chinatown. She purchased the 1,400-square-foot unit for close to $700,000 in 2007. Her late payment is becoming an issue in her re-election campaign, coming only months after it was revealed that she had failed to pay $300,000 in taxes on a private plane.
To be fair to McCaskill, at least she’s paying her taxes—and all of them. Over the years members of Congress who own homes in D.C. have been caught taking advantage of the Homestead Deduction, which is only available to D.C. residents.
