Is Fairfax County no longer safe for livestock? Over the weekend, four farm animals—two goats, a calf and a chicken—at the Frying Pan Farm Park were slashed by an unknown assailant, the Post reports.

The animals reside at the Kidwell Barn, a petting zoo often visited by families with young children. Fairfax Police believe the slashing took place between 5 p.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. Sunday, according to a department press release. The attacks were discovered Sunday morning when farm staff made their regular feeding rounds and found the animals had suffered lacerations to their heads. None of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening.

The specimens at Kidwell Barn are all said to be very good-tempered and trained to approach any human whom they might believe to feed them, police said. One of the goats and the calf are bottle-fed.

Visitors Sunday to Frying Pan could see gashes and wound dressings on the animals that were attacked, the Post reports:

Henry, a calf born at the farm earlier this year, had three gashes on his head, the largest dressed with staples. A mother goat named Scandal bore similar injuries, as did an unnamed baby goat. The slashed chicken was recovering in private quarters.

But the bizarre barnyard attack is just the latest assault on farm animals in Fairfax County. Last month, at a farm adjacent to Frying Pan Farm Park, three horses were discovered with large knife wounds on their flanks. Police said it is unknown whether the two incidents are related.
