Assuming that this morning’s drizzle doesn’t return, Fort Reno continues tonight with one of the best top-to-bottom lineups of the season. Mobius Strip scorches with socially conscious hardcore, Hey Arbore has catchy songs that recall early Slumberland acts and East Paw will provide the smooth but skilled works that have made them a staple at places like The Garden Open Mic at Bloom Bars. Free, 7:00 p.m. (UPDATE: The drizzle has canceled tonight’s Ft. Reno, sadly. This date will be rescheduled.)
>> Verizon Center: Coldplay, Robyn, Wolf Gang (not to be confused with these guys Although if they opened for Coldplay…it would be hilarious.) $46.50-$107, 7:00 p.m.
TUESDAY
Apparently, Roomrunner is not the only band to spring from the Ashes of phenomenal Baltimore band Double Dagger. Believers (which also includes members of Future Islands) has also picked up the torch. They’ll be opening for Yeveto and excellent young jazz-meets-prog rock group Les Rhinoceros tonight at the Black Cat. $8, 8:00 p.m.
>> Iota: He’s My Brother, She’s My Sister, Sean Rowe. $12, 8:00 p.m.
WEDNESDAY
We saw Big Mouth at Fort Reno for the first time on Thursday and holy crap, we think they’re onto something. The three members not behind a drum kit throw themselves around to the sound of dissonant jagged guitar while their singer yells like hell. We think that the Velvet Lounge may be more conducive to the mobile bodies this sort of music deserves. Marc Ganancias and Don Zientara open. $8, 9:00 p.m.
>> U Street Music Hall: Moombahton Massive XVI: Nadastrom, Sabo, Jen Lasher, Cousin Culo. $8, 9:00 p.m.
THURSDAY
Don’t be fooled by the name, Alberta Cross is not from Canada. Furthermore, the New York by way of London duo has more in common with the guitar heroes of southern rock bands than with much of the current music coming from either locale. They’ll be at the Rock and Roll Hotel. Come early for Everest who have toured with Neil Young and My Morning Jacket. Aaron Lee Tasjan opens. $14, 7:30 p.m.
>> Wolf Trap: Buddy Guy, John Mayall. $42 in-house, $25 lawn, 8:00 p.m.
>> Fort Reno: Nunchucks, RCRDS, Satori Trova. Free, 7:00 p.m.
FRIDAY
Sockets Records has played host to many standout local bands and Buildings and Hume have always been two of the shining pillars. Hume has varied between guitar based prog-jazz and percussion-heavy pedal pressing, but has always kept things sonically dense and emotionally charged. Buildings, meanwhile doesn’t meander, so much as play build upon the patterns they’ve just made with their airtight unit of bass, guitars and drums but they also put on a powerful performance. Both will be with Other Colors (which includes members of Fossil Eyes) at Comet Ping Pong. $10, 10:00 p.m.
>> Red Palace: Girl in a Coma, Deadbeat Darling. $10 in advance/$12 day of show, 9:00 p.m.
SATURDAY
Bethany Cosentino’s songs have always had lonely and depressing lyrics but on Best Coast’s newest album, but for the opening song that talks about the waves, the songs trade the “Island in the Sun” feel from the last album for a more Lorreta-esque approach to heartbreak on The Only Place. It’s not as fun as Crazy For You but it suits Cosentino’s voice well. Best Coast will play a sold out show with Those Darlins at the 9:30 Club tonight. Sold out, 8:00 p.m.
>> Comet Ping Pong: Blankus Larry, Guantanamo Baywatch, Sad Bones. $10, 10:00 p.m.
SUNDAY
Definitive Jux label head and consistently interesting emcee El-P has a new album out, Cancer 4 Cure, and he’ll be at the Rock and Roll Hotel with some stellar openers in Killer Mike and Mister Motherfucking Exquire. $25, 9:00 p.m.
